The proverbial bow was
tied on the hugely successful Tennis & Rackets Association's Centenary Season
with a sensational black tie party at the Hurlingham Club on April 26th. The
season had been officially kicked off last November with a dinner for over 500
people at Lord's Cricket Ground.
On Wednesday the 23rd of April, 150 celebrants participated in the Golf Day at
Walton Heath and the main draw in rackets began with first round "finalists" as
contestants in the plate competition, hosted by St Pauls School. The
Invitational Doubles Rackets competition was held concurrently as the top pairs
in the world were invited to this competition. Mark Hue Williams and World
Singles Champion Harry Foster beat Alex Titchener-Barrett and Tim Cockcroft 3-2.
The main draw finalists were Nick Hutton and Simon Higson who beat the team of
Charlie Braithewaite and Tim Drayson, also by a 3-2 score. The Plate competition
was won by the team comprised of Mark Penna and George Tysoe.
The traditional black tie stag was attended by 120 on Thursday, April 24 and was
expertly emceed my uber Mjolnir James Coyne and the crowd was superbly humored
by the remarks given by former World Champion John Prenn.
