2009 UNITED STATES OPEN SUMMARY

Alex Titchener-Barrett took the US Open Singles Championship hardware on Sunday as defending champion James Stout retired (injury) midway into the fifth and final game at 8-7 down. Subsequently, James Coyne and Will Hopton won in a walkover against the finalist team of Mike Gooding and Stout.

Said Detroit Racquet Club president Thomas Howe in a phone interview to NARA , "We saw the greatest rackets ever in Detroit this weekend. There were so many people in the Club throughout the weekend. We are quite pleased that so many Queen's Club members made the journey as we witnessed the highest quality play ever."

Despite an overabundance of moisture on the floor and walls due to an overachieving thermometer (approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit / 15 degrees Celsius) that caused the "sweating" on the court walls and floor, organizers were able to get all matches in, in an orderly manner. Play had to be suspended for some time to allow a warm front to pass to alleviate the condensation. Despite that minor hiccup, the weekend still proved a huge success.

NARA's final act for the season begins next week in Chicago with the commencement of the Western Open, the Murray Sales (+40s) and the Kendrick Cup (novice) competitions. Organizers are expecting close to 60 out-of-towners to help tie a bow on a highly successful  club season.

However, The World Doubles team of Neil Smith and Mark Hubbard begin their defense of the World Doubles Championship on April 17th in NYC against Harry Foster and Mark Hue-Williams. The second leg will take place on April 25th at the Queen's Club in London.

Western Open and Tom Price summaries

February 28th to March 2nd 2008

Detroit Racquet Club

Ah Detroit. Home of Michigan rackets. What Grand Rapids aspires to be when it grows up.  Motown. Cracking good fun.

Some 70 black tied gents pack the Club on February 28th for a superbly executed stag, emceed by Norb "don't call me Oscar" Madison. With a huge piece of beef and plenty o' wine, things were off to a raucous start when the dice started to fly.

Over the weekend, the Western Open and Tom Price Tournaments were to be contested and with 35 out-of towners the stage was set for all sorts of chicanery. As many as 9 from oversees, 5 fellows, 6 from Montreal and 8 Chicagoans made up the preponderance of visitors. A tremendous effort was executed by several Bristol Uni students to travel during school.

In the end, Sunday singles final pitted top seeded Alex Titchener-Barrett (AT-B) versus James Coyne. The lads were fresh off an exhibition match the prior Tuesday at the Racquet Club of Chicago in front of 45 in court number one (two courts! no waiting!)  See separate write-up in Chicago page on the NARA website on this event.

AT-B beat third seed Will Hopton 15-13; 10-15; 15-10 and 15-2 to earn one finals berth while James "Coynie" Coyne regrouped after an opening game loss to 4th seed Joe Bone, (7-15) to rifle off three straight wins 17-14; 15-12 and 15-11 for the other finalist position. The showdown on Sunday proved that AT-B's game is certainly one of the best as he almost threw a bagel at Coyne in the second game and won 3-0. Game scores for the finals were 15-6;15-1;15-11.

In the Doubles Tournament, AT-B teamed with Coyne (top seed) and cranked out a win 5-15;15-7;15-7 and 15-13 over the second seeded team of Joe Bone and MRC's Ryan Tulley.

Concurrently running over the weekend were the Tom Price (over 50s) Singles and Doubles competitions. As appropriate as it may seem, Tim Price (MRC) scored a rather dramatic finals win over Manchester's Jamie Bebb 2-1 (11-15;15-10;17-16). Bebb faulted at match point and, in return, so did Tim. But it was the Montrealer who prevailed. Bebb beat Chicago's Dick Ryan in one semi-final and Price beat local favorite and NARA standout (VP) Thomas Howe for the other semi-final.

The Price Doubles winners were the team of Price and Howe who beat the team of Ron Kaulbach (MRC)/Bebb rather handily 15-7; 15-5.

The Saturday evening ball was staged at the Hunt Country Club in Grosse Pointe where grandees danced the night away to Mowtown-styled music. There were over 80 in attendance.

The overwhelming consensus of players, pretenders and contenders was that many thanks to Steve Toseland, Matt Walker, Norb Madison and all organizers for a well-oiled weekend (insert joke here). Word should spread fast that the DRC put on a fabulous weekend to end the NARA season.

NARA would also like to make one last mention of the T&RA's Centenary weekend that begins April 23 and concludes on April 27th. Please visit www.tennisandrackets.com for more info or contact your NARA representative.

Greetings Gentlemen,

Many of you are already aware that Steve Toseland had expressed last fall his desire to become a full-time Racquets Professional. Thus Steve arrived in Detroit in early December on his own nickel for a three week trial basis. The purpose of this visit was to see if his presence as an “acting” professional would enhance additional play on the racquets and squash court. At the conclusion of his three week trial period it was indisputable that Steve’s presence had made a dramatic impact on both the quality of play and especially the amount of play here at the DRC. Therefore, I am pleased to advise the DRC membership that because of Steve’s dramatic impact and conscientious effort the Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to hire Steve for an additional 4 month trial period. Depending upon Steve’s continuous efforts and impact the board will review the relationship to see if it warrants a further commitment in the future. The purpose in this notice is to advise all members of Steve’s relationship to the club and to welcome Steve to his new position.

This is a wonderful opportunity to improve your game and I hope you will take full advantage of this arrangement. Since I am coordinating this effort; should you have any concerns or questions regarding Steve, please direct them to me.  Thomas P. Howe 248-229-4370

Bart Sambrook was the big winner over the weekend at the Western Open at the Detroit Racquet Club.

After getting smoked in the first game of the single finals by Bostonian, Todd Meringoff, he overcame a 7-0 deficit in game two to go on and win the title 3 games to 1.

In the doubles draw, he teamed with Keene Addington of Chicago, and they managed an "as-close-as-you-can-get" final against Nelson Russell and Todd Meringoff from the Tennis and racquet Club of Boston. The final went 5 games. Russell and Merringoff were ahead 14-12 in game 5 and had "two hands in". Addington and Sambrook managed to stave off two match points and the game went to a 3 point set. With Sambrook and Addington ahead 2-1 in the set, the Bostonians managed to survive and came in only to give up the serving box yet again. This time Sambrook and Addington came in and won the next point and the championship.

Kevin McGuire (NY) defeated DRC champion, Tom Howe in the Murray Sales singles' finals. kevin didn't fare as well in the doubles as he and partner, Montrealer Scott Pritchard, lost to Peter Dunne of Chicago and Tom Howe of the host Detroit Racquet Club.

the draws will be available soon
