Tonbridge Second Court

David Makey had a dream – that dream is now reality.

On Monday 19th March, the second Tonbridge Rackets court was formally opened. The incredible efforts of Tom Shields as the Appeal Committee Chairman were recognised by all present. The former old gym has undergone a complete transformation into a splendid new court, with its scarlet floor a dazzling contrast to the original court. Open Champion Will Hopton and Rackets legend and former World Champion, John Prenn, played an exhibition match against the Tonbridge 1st pair, Jonny Maltz & George Moynihan.

Speeches to open the new court were made firstly by the Headmaster, Tim Haynes, followed by the Chairman of the Governors, Jonathan Cohen QC, thirdly Tom Shields and lastly by the Maestro! David Makey made a brilliant speech.

The 170 guests were amazed by the magnificent looking new court. Red Ferrari in colour and many people said it was the prettiest looking court ever! It played beautifully too.

A huge cake in the shape of an open Rackets court was made . Two figures playing on the icing cake court made of icing sugar. One had curly hair and superb technique!

A champagne reception followed the speeches before the players gave a superb exhibition match. The T&RA team winning by 3-0.

Wonderful evening had by all and a tremendous success for Tonbridge School and the Rackets community.

Rackets Quintathlon at Queen’s Club

To continue the noble tradition of having a major international get-together every few years, often around the time of the Olympics, we are holding a rackets Quintathlon from 7 to 14 July 2012

The format remains the same- two teams of about 50 players each, hopefmericans. Each team will play rackets, real tennis, lawn tennis, golf and a bit of squash, all in doubles and cap off the week with a “mystery sport”…with just an hour’s notice of the rules !

Social events, which will be open to non-players, are yet to be finalized but are sure to include the Queen’s Club annual barbeque. The week will also include the grand opening of the new rackets gallery and long room at Queen’s.

It would be great to hear expressions of interest so please email Mark Agate on mark.agate@springlaw.co.uk or James Walton on James@jgwalton.com

The official website of Quintathlon 2012 is up and running and a recent informational flyer can be viewed by clicking here.

Next and final stop on the NARA schedule will be the Walsh Cup ( +60s doubles) and the Murray Sales Cup (+40s singles and doubles) in Detroit April 11-13th.
